Rumi: The Big Red Book

Coleman Barks

Rumi: The Big Red Book

"Rumi's "Divani Shamsi Tabriz" ("The Works of Shams of Tabriz"--named in honor of Rumi's spiritual teacher and friend) is a collection of lyric poems that contain more than 40,000 verses by America's bestselling poet, and is a classic of Persian literature.

Its most familiar form is as a big red book, hence the name. Coleman Barks is famous for his renderings of Rumi's poetry and his work on these particular poems has never been published anywhere.

This book represents over thirty-three years on Rumi's seminal classic, a vast collection centering on Shams Tabrizi, a wandering mystic who transformed Rumis life.

Rumi was already renowned when Shams arrived in Konya, in todays Turkey, having wandered for years searching for someone with a soul as profound as his own with whom to share sobbet, a mystical conversation about God and love.

Rumi and Shams inspired each other for several years, until Shams mysteriously disappeared. He lives on in Rumis searching poems. Most of the hundreds of poems collected here are short although even the longer ones have the same intimate tone.

Richly sensual yet never flowery, Barks language emphasizes Rumis embodied spirituality in a book to savor.

Changing on the Job

Changing on the Job

Jennifer Garvey Berger

HC AUD39.95

Changing on the Job

Listen to people in every field and you'll hear a call for more sophisticated and thoughtful leadership, for leaders who can solve more complex problems than the human race has ever faced before. But these leaders won't simply come to the fore; we have to develop them, and we must cultivate them as quickly as is humanly possible.

Changing on the Job is a means to this end. Leadership discussions often begin with tips and toolkits that take for granted the readiness of our leaders to face the challenges of today. Changing on the Job builds on sophisticated theories of adult growth and development. As opposed to showing us how to play the role of a leader in a "paint by numbers" fashion, this book helps readers to become individuals who are capable of leading and are ready to do so in any scenario.

Moving from the theoretical to the practical, it shows how organizations can grow the complex and agile workforce that they need while maintaining and improving performance. Using real-world examples which bring concepts to life, author Jennifer Garvey Berger invites readers to change the way they think about leadership and adult growth, while offering a set of building blocks, so that readers and the talent that they support can realize their fullest potential.

With a background as a teacher, writer, researcher, and coach, Jennifer Garvey Berger helps individuals and teams to transform themselves and their organizations. Jennifer has worked with executives in a wildly diverse set of organizations, helping leaders to build the capacity to thrive in a complex world. She also teaches coaches around the world about adult development, deep listening, and transformational habits of mind.

Real Happiness

Real Happiness - the Power of Meditation

Sharon Salzberg

PB and CD AUD24.95

Real Happiness

Thousands of years prove it, and Western science backs it: Meditation sharpens focus. Meditation lowers blood pressure, relieves chronic pain, reduces stress. Meditation helps us experience greater calm. Meditation connects us to our inner-most feelings and challenges our habits of self-judgment.

Meditation helps protect the brain against aging and improves our capacity for learning new things. Meditation opens the door to real and accessible happiness. There is no better person to show a beginner how to harness the power of meditation than Sharon Salzberg, one of the world's foremost meditation teachers and spiritual authors.

Cofounder of the Insight Meditation Society, author of Lovingkindness, Faith, and other books, Ms. Salzberg distills 30 years of teaching meditation into a 28-day program that will change lives. It is not about Buddhism, it's not esoteric, it is closer to an exercise, like running or riding a bike. From the basics of posture, breathing, and the daily schedule to the finer points of calming the mind, distraction, dealing with specific problem areas (pain in the legs? falling asleep?) to the larger issues of compassion and awareness, Real Happiness is a complete guide.

It explains how meditation works; why a daily meditation practice results in more resiliency, creativity, peace, clarity, and balance; and gives twelve meditation practices, including mindfulness meditation and walking meditation. An extensive selection of her students' FAQs covers the most frequent concerns of beginners who meditate-"Is meditation selfish?" "How do I know if I'm doing it right?" "Can I use meditation to manage weight?"

Leading you through the diverse schools of Buddhist philosophy, this book also shows us how to let go of our own strong ideas of self and how to find a little more happiness in life, for ourselves and for others. For all the millions of followers of the Dalai Lama's writings, and for anyone yet to be introduced to his thinking, A Profound Mind is the perfect book to learn how to dedicate our positive activities to the benefit of all in order to build a better world.
