Angel
in the Rubble
Genelle Guzman-McMillan
PB AUD25.00
This is a true story from the
last person taken out of the World trade Centre
collapse in 2001 alive. Initially I was curious
to understand what it must have felt like to
be on that day, in that place.
As I read the pages I found myself
in awe of the human spirit. Genelle and her
co-writer William Croyle create a vivid imagery
of the day - from the ordinariness of the morning
- grabbing a coffee, chatting with work colleagues
through to the confusion and uncertainty of
what to do and where to go.
Genelle is trapped in the rubble
for over 24 hours and she shares her thoughts,
emotions, prayers in great depth.
After her rescue came many
months in recovery, both physically and psychologically.
I was touched by the frankness in her story
it would have been easy to gloss over the deep
personal issues that came to stare her in the
face as she waited, always with the hope of
rescue but without the certainity.
