When I started reading this book
I could not get into what I term- my reading
groove of silence. The words were grating and
seemed out of tune. Being stubborn, and mindful
of the great reviews I was hearing about he
book, I kept going and was so pleased I did.
There are so many elements to
her writing. Her research into the journals
and letters of early explorers, for whom silence
was a by product of their journey, was fascinating
and made me consider how different the act of
silence must be when it is forced upon you rather
than chosen.
The published words of many mystics
from all traditions supported her initial view
that silence comes in many forms.
Her own experiences of moving
to the remote area os Skye, being in the Sinai
desert and then treking through remote parts
of the UK illustrated how environment influences
the quality and depth of silence.
Part of Sara's exploration of
silence was to understand how she could use
it to 'improve' her writing and her discoveries
are very compelling reading, especially if like
me you feel that your creativity would be much
better if only I was in a silent space!
Weaved throughout is her own story,
at times very personal and raw. When I arrived
at the last page I realised my own realtionship
with silence had changed... and that was unexpected.
