I need to state upfront that I
never 'got' poetry. I am not sure where I was
during my poetry classes at school. So it was
with curiosity that I started reading this book.
What a new world opened before
me. The magic and emotion of the poetry referred
was overwhelming. I found myself following Kim
Rosen's instructions to read a poem aloud and
was amazed at how different the words sounded
than when I read them in my head.
Kim Rosen weaves her own journey with poetry
into the chapters with each chapter taking you
further into an understanding and relationship
with the poem in question.
She references poets whose work has resonated
with her and especially focuses on work that
supports you in the traumas of life.
She has titled one chapter " Writing Poems
on Your Bones" where she takes you through
how to learn a poem by heart. And the words
'by heart' are critical. It's not learning my
memory it's learning each word and stanza so
that they become a part of your biology and
firmly placed in your heart.
A CD comes with the book and it has 18 poems
read either by Kim Rosen or the author. What
an amazing soundtrack.. my only comment - the
poem readings did not last long enough!
